Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) are plants or animals that have been genetically changed in the laboratory to promote characteristics that are considered beneficial. For instance, some plants have been injected with bacteria or pesticides to allow the plant to thrive even when it’s doused with chemicals such as insecticides.
Herbicide resistance and pesticide production are the two main traits that have been added to GMO’s and while these traits confer economic benefits to food and chemical companies, they provide no nutritional benefits to consumers. In fact, there is considerable debate within the scientific community with some experts claiming that GMO’s are harmful to health while others dispute that claim. https://academic.oup.com/nutritionreviews/article-abstract/67/1/1/1840264
Currently, GMO’s are prevalent within the U.S. processed food supply. Soy (94%), cotton (90%), sugar beets (95%), and corn (88%) are the most commonly modified crops. Due to their controversial nature, GMO’s are banned as food ingredients in Europe and elsewhere but in the U.S., the FDA has approved their use and does not even require labeling claims on ingredient lists.
At Liberty Bion, we are committed to producing and selling all natural products that are non-GMO. Recently, our flagship probiotic stain, Bacillus subtilis DE111, was granted non-GMO verification by the Non-GMO Project https://www.nongmoproject.org/. The Non-GMO Project is the market leader for GMO avoidance and is the most trusted third-party source of verification of non-GMO foods and products.
DE111, a probiotic strain that support digestion and immune health, has been clinically tested. Genetic testing of the stain has shown that it contains no DNA plasmids, antibiotic resistant or other deleterious genes. The DE111 strain is one of ten probiotic stains in the Hero ProbioticsTM formulation. The formulation includes 30 billion organisms in each capsule and is considered a high-potency probiotic.
We are proud to display the “non-GMO” stamp on our Hero ProbioticsTM label because it reflects our commitment to natural foods. Unlike other brands that may include GMO probiotic strains, we are committed to providing strains that are all natural and unmodified.
